Mourning

Since the "liberation" war that turned everything upside down, and after a very weakened country was completely torn apart-And well, the fact that the democratic civil humanrights loving west is stile silent about another whole country here that was horribly erased from the world map does not help either- this region is really suffering.
I always felt that we should find a way to speak out, to remind, explain and perhaps awaken some people's conscience, or win some on our side who might help us reach out to the world..
The picture of the Arab Muslim world in the west is bad. Powerfully pro-US and pro_Israeli media are always doing their best when it comes to this, and some fanatic lunatics here and there give them more than the help they could ask for. And we...Are generally the same scared silent poor puppets as usual, watching few brave human rights activists/ intellectuals pay for doing any thing else.

We are weak. No doubt, specially compared to the US or Israel. We do not have as powerful "effective" armies as they do, the most powerful in the world, and we will never be given a chance to even have a chance,(very logical for their powerful deciding part). We do not have what they have, no mass destruction weapons, no nuclear weapons, and not a lot of other things. And when other places in the weaker east ever might get powerful dangerous weapons the west and UN and the US will have big things to say and do about that. I think we here in the east don't really like it either when US and Israel have all that unlimited horrible weapons. Specially since we are the ones they are tried on. But it's not like we expect much done about that from the UN or the US. And the reason is not lack of imagination!

Some lunatics here and there seem to think they are new unquestionable prophets and that they will have their glorious victorious war by wearing old stile clothes (from 500 years ago) and waving with swords, and think that will win over all the high tech western biological/ chemical/ mass destruction/ nuclear weapons and bombs and robots and etc, etc...
How horrible if some people think it's either that or nothing. Since we don't have weapons really to defend any thing.
Luckily for me I think there is another war, that we can win. A war where we don't have to get dirty hands and souls ( like some). A war of the word. It's all about justice, awareness, intelligence, and peoples conscience. We are not winning that war now. We are very far from that. But we could win it.
So when I heard the very tragic news about the murder of this great internationally famous Syrian director I was sad from deep inside of my heart. He might not be so known to deal with the current violent issues in this area in his work. But he has done a lot of great works to at least give an alternative picture than the one often seen in the western media. A true picture of the Arab Muslim civilization and history this region is proud of. His name was Mustafa Alaqaad, some of his famous movies are "The message" and " Omar Almukhtar". And as usual, a picture says more than a thousand words.

very true, yet depressing. the contributors to our war of words are only a few. and their efforts are often disrupted by governments and government-followers.

may god help us...

Thank you for your posting. It got me thinking.

But I disagree with you in one point: A "war of words" is no solution. Is has to become a PEACE of words. See "Q&A" for more about that.

abu reema:
You might be right that there are only few and they get disrupted frequently. But every grassroots developement started that way: with one seed. Today there are already far too many of such "seeds" to stop them, and the fact that I (a german who has never been to the middle east) am talking now with you about something that happens thousands of miles from me, and feel sad when I think of how a whole people suffers, is only showing how far the grassroots have spread already.

I don't want to repeat everything here, please see the entry "Q&A" for my reflections (or, *harrumph* ramblings *g*) about it:

When I say a war of the word, I don't mean by that insulting, screaming and cursing, or any thing like that..I mean something else, something peacefull where one can use intelligence, and the sense of justice.Or unjustice..In this case. Thats what I meant when I said without getting dirty hands or souls.(Unlike some who have all tha means, armies and weapons).
Recently when Europe was so "upset" about some leaders in Iran saying that Israel has no right to exist, I was boiling with words to say and heard no one who said anything ast all..It was so absurd and scary , as the whole situation. Who come it is so horrible to say that, and think that..When by having this opinion, it means you think Palestine was rightfully erased and removed from the worldmap! so Israel could bring on millions and millions of jews from all over the world and kick out its inhabitantans. How come a country ( Israel)who exists on this horrible bloody bases be so important for the west to exist, but the millions of Palestinian refugees who stil have keys to their stolen homes ..BECAUSE Israel exist well to hell with them. I guess they are arabs after all?!!
When I say a war of words, I also think about how often, and very well, pepole in Europe talk, have lessons in school, programs on tv, radio, theaters, musemums, about mass concentration camps and the suffering of the jews at that time. Which is also very often and convieniently braught up when ever Israels brutality is talked about..
When I say I want a war of words: I mean I want pepole to lnow at least as much about the details of the suffering of Palestinias, that is..By the way, going on UNTIL today, unlike the mass concentration suffering that ended about 60 years ago!
When parts in Gaza not so long ago was evacuated and the world media showed the poor crying Israelis over having to give back some land -they have originally stolen anyway- most media did not show the over 60 arab houses in estern Jerusalmen where it's owners where forced to leave: you see, they lived there before the Israelis came with their guns and declared "Israel", so their pappers proving they own the houses where Palestinian, not Israelian, which means they have no legal value in Israel( not a big surprise), and Israeli authorities have the right to throw them out.
Anyway I could just go on and on and on about all the dubbel moral and unjustice but I dont have the time, and just telling it to you won't change anything anyway.
But this unjustice and the suffering is what we need to tell in the war of word. With media, magazines, books, etc..

Catherine,

The Palestinian issue cannot be viewed without a proper context as a failure of both Israel and Arab leaders.

A Palestinian state would have existed now if Arafat would have negotiated in good faith for Camp David 2000.

We wouldn't have West Bank and Gaza problems without the Six Days War.

We wouldn't have Six Days war if the interested nations accepted the UN partition of 48 over the British Mandate of Palestine.

I know Sharon is hated and done a lot of shitty stuff, but he has done what other leaders both Israel and Palestine couldn't do; an ending point to the conflict. We are ending this conflicts that our fathers' and grandfathers' generation started.

No, no one will get everything they want and not all will get their justice, but hey, that will have to be good enough.

At 4:42 PM, Catherine said...

What??Justice?! I think some pepole like you need to know how the Israeli governement is treating and making the life of Palestinians right now!
Yes as I said earlier, the world are praising Sharon for the evacuation of Gaza, and not even mentionnwnig the evacuation of arabs that is going on until TODAY. Just some monthes ago hundreds of jewish Canadians came and moved to Israel. And Not one single Palestinian was allowed to return home. But on the darker side more Palestinians got kicked out and had their houses demolished. And on that same side STIL nothing, no pressure what so ever, is on Israel from US to force them obey some UN resolutions, that they can saftley completly ignore, with a satisfied smile from US politics, while a war was done on Iraq for some UN resolutions and that country was completly torn apart and brought to the ground. And Syria had all kinds of pressure also cause of some UN resolutions.
Well so sorry about that six day war: The blame is ofcourse on arabs that did not just accept the a part of their homeland was, just like that, stolen! And all the pepole who came from those stolen cities and villages, who had their memories there, their streets, their schools, their lives, their idenities, and lost their houses, lands, and a lot of their beloved ones when they were shot at if they did not leave the are so Israelis from Europe and all over the world could just take it and move in instead..
Yes the blame is on arabs for the six days war, how dare arabs attack back, they and their land and identity should just be erased with no trying to get it back or defende or complain!
Come on Dody!! My god!..YOu have NO IDEA!

Catherine,

Here's how nations got build, the winner got to dictate the terms.

It's ugly, messy and a lot of people got hurt; there are losers and winers.

Syria was under Ottoman Empires for hundreds of years, no? along with Egypt, much of Northern Africa, Palestine, Jordan, etc, etc.

Arabia is called Saudi Arabia because King Abdul Aziz Ibn Abdul Rahman Al Saud united the kingdom and his family rule the kingdom ever since.

Sudan used to be part of Egypt. Pakistan used to be part of India. Bangladesh used to be part of Pakistan.

Do you know how many people got kicked out of their lands when that happens? Millions.

A lot (not all) of Palestinians got kicked out of their houses and lands during the war pre and post UN 48 partition.

It's a terrible thing but Palestinians are not unique in this regards. The difference is this, the people in Pakistan, or India or Egypt moved on from the issue and get to work on their own country.

What's done is done and you deal with the current reality, not so much history.

At 5:22 PM, Catherine said...

THey are quiet unique : YOu absluttly cant make that cmparison! It's crazy!
A country beeing occupied by a foregin country who dictates the rules instead of letting it's own pepole decide how they want to live IS nothing like erasing a country from the worldmap!
And you what...THe CURRENT...my friend as I said, is stil that TODAY araqb houses are demolished and their owners kicked out of their cities! THat is STIL going on NOw, CURRENTLY, so that horrible story is not just History. It's NOW.
It's what I have said in like 10 times now.

At 5:31 PM, Dody G. said...

What I'm saying is this.

Don't let the current and past injustices on the ground sabotage the near, medium and long term of an Independent and Free Palestine.

Palestinian will soon have their own nation, first time ever in thousands of years (Kurdish people for example, never have their own)

And don't do something stupid like the second intifada again (which costs billions to the Palestinian economy)

The statehood of Palestine is a given now and coming soon. Just don't sabotage it.

At 10:07 AM, Catherine said...

"don't sabotage it"
What is that suppose to mean??
Oh so it's ofcouse "us" who are making the sabotage?
We just don't learn do we? Same thing as I said earlier on the six days war. Damn that we don't just get killed and erased withot complaining.
Palestinias should not complain about the injustice done and just forget about their rights, and also do not complain ( and by that sabotage) when Israeli army violate human rights over and over untill this very secong with no complains from the Europe or US. But hey..They are just uncivilised arabs, right?
You know Dody pepole like need to realize that you know much less about this than Palestinians who are living it and your country's politics and your media is so way biased when it comes to this!
It's probably easy to just wave arabs away and say they can't get over old issues and they are just bad angry uncivilised creaters while pepole from the west and Israel, are "right".
It's much easier than getting involved in a tragic violent thing like that, it's easier to disregard them and think oh it's just another pepole fighting like in far away in Africa etc..¨
It's not. It's very different. And it's very worng to compare Palestinias to kurds, there is nothing in common!
Pepole here now so much more about what is happening here than so many in the US who talk about this. But I guess arabs are the ones who sabotage it, can't imagine why would they get angry when their houses are being demolished and they thrown until this moment? An American girl tried to save a Palestinian family not so long ago, maybe she thought that beeing a white western American gives her life a bit more value than the lives of sabotaging arabs. She was wrong, the Israeli bulldozer ignored and crashed her body to death. Rachel I think her name was..And there was never a reason for Israel to fear anything even at that point. I remember how stupid I felt when I was actually surprised when Bush smiling welcomed Sharon to his private ranch and offered him some chocklad bars produced there with a papper rap around them representing Israels flagg. So where is the difference between Isreal and US? and..Biased: Are you kidding?
Yes, very stupid to get angry and "sabotage" when Israeli army violates human rights, uses forbidden weapons and stop amulances with hurt arabs until they bleed out, and and and...I could go on and on..I guess arabs should just suffer and die and silence, so there will not be any "sabotage".

Peace is great, Arabs are not monsters even if some might think they are, they want peace too..But for peace, Dody..It would be great if the demolishing and killing would stop, for a starter..And that before pepole like you say that arabs should not "sabotage" by complaining and reacting about that.

And I can't beleive you kind of tried to justify the horrors that face Palestinians just cause, well it's life the strongest wins.
I think that's a very odd thing to say.
Anyway I can't discuss this anymore. I've got other things to do. If I had the money to have a tv station, produce movies, publish books it would be meeningfull to tell more about this, but this blog does not make that kind of change.

Catherine,

There is no need to accuse me of things that I don't say.

I have a green passport, not blue one. All Muslim countries have green passport. My country is Indonesia and we have supported the Palestinian cause since the beginning. We were under occupation for 400 years before independence in 1945 and winning 5 years of revolutionary war after that against Allied Forces (British, Dutch and US). There are more muslims in Indonesia than Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and Egypt combined. And yes, we have a full and diverse democracy.

So no, I'm not representing the Western view; this one is from the East of the Middle East.

What I am saying is simply that viewing the Palestinian struggle from a close and personal view is not very helpful. There's too much pain and bad blood in the history that if personal view are taken, this problem is not going to be resolved.

This what fails Yasser Arafat. He couldn't move away from the personal strugle to the broader independence struggle; in the end, he died without seeing an independent Palestine.

Abu Mazen on the other hand, has a real chance to see both flags of Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza.

About "sabotage", let me list a couple of self destructive actions done by Palestinian that undermine its own cause.

1. PLO supported Iraqi invasion to Kuwait.

2. Yasser Arafat started/supported the second Intifada. The second intifada was a disaster. He thought he could replicate the success of the first intifada, but he wasn't there during the first ones in 1986. He was in Tunisia.

3. Suicide bombings. Ask an Egyptian or an Indonesian or a Jordanian now how they feel about suicide bombings. You don't know the damage of a suicide bombing until your country is hit by it.

4. Trespassing the border between Gaza and Sinai. Egyptians are pissed when the pictures show that the Palestinian are jumping their borders and breaching the walls.

5. Corruption. At least it's under control now since Salam Fayyad started cleaning up the financial mess of the PLO. The world, majority from the West, contributed around one billion dollars through UNRW a year for Palestine. Palestine now receives the highest amount of international donors per capita.

The sufferring of the Palestinian is well known and understood; if you haven't noticed, the international community have been working on this issue for decades.

What's needed is a way out and cooler heads. The way out is near.

At 2:52 PM, Catherine said...

But you have lived in the US for quiet a while now, right?

Anyway: About those suicide bombs, YOu can not refer to it without also having to looka what a whole army is doing. And that brings so much more blood and harm. I mean the situation in Israel is hardly to compare with the bombs in eGYPT and Jordan, allthough all bloodshed and violence is very tragic ofcourse. But Egypt and Jordan are hardly, practising methodes and actions against Palestinians or other arabs comparable to what is practised in Israel. This peace, and solution you are talking about demand understandig of not just a very clear thing like that, but much more.
You pointed out a few things and numbered them, but on the other hand you left many many thingsI mentionned that I think are a bit of the core of the problem unanswered as well.
A minium of fair scale and stop of a dubbel moral is needed. And what really would be great for all parts actually, if the US were less biased when it comes to this.
Anyway look Dody, I don't agree with everything you are saying. But I'll just leave it at that.
cause..Well, You know...

At 12:04 AM, Dody G. said...

I've lived the US for about 4.5 years. In more or less a month I'll be moving to Alexandria, Egypt.

I think here's the fundamental difference in our perspective on Palestine. You view it from the people perspective, I view it from goverment/leadership perspective;

As you know, a nation/people don't always get the best government they deserve (Syria for example, deserve a much better government). But for the rest of the world, it is the government that we deal with.

When the world deal with Palestine issue, they deal with the PLO and its organizations. The peace activities etc currently in the West Bank and Gaza are doing wonderful work but on the really important issue, they don't have a seat on the table. Leaders in the position of power (and guns) does, whether it is Hamas or PLO or etc.

It doesn't matter how wonderful Palestinian people are, if the leaders that represent them are crooks and incompetent, their cause is doom. The Israel government is laughing their asses off on some of their Palestinian counterpart because they are so predictable and incompetent.
