Watching bubbles
Hey people...If there are any of you here. I was very happy to read all the comments on the last post, and no I have not married ;) , so that is not why I have been away. I've been living in my own little bubble lately, not following so much news or going out a lot . It's nice to live like that sometimes thing is that, since the situation and atmosphere here is boiling, I can't go on knowing nothing..(Yes : EVEN THOUGH I live in Syria, the place where for example when the whole world changed and watched the statue of Saddam falling, our (government) TV showed us nature programs..) In news it is said "Syria" might be to blame for the death of Harriri. Well, I, like about 18 other million people are from Syria and love it and identify ourselves with it. I get irritated over that the word "Syria" is used. Although it might be meant "the leadership of Syria" or parts of the it and that is too long to say every time. We have grown up here, several generations, brainwashed to believe that the ruler here is our unquestionable leader, and the most important "person" here, well actually never even really regarded as a person but something much bigger, a god. His "majesty" is the one who build everything here, his name is on literally everything, the Umayya mosque, Sheraton hotel, Méridian..You just name it. When ever we hear or sing the national theme no way we are not going to see his picture all the time. And a word we read and hear all the time "Suriya Ala***'". We are so blinded by all that. We love Syria, so than, we must love the "great" ruler..The problem is that we are too blinded to even imagine a world, a life, a Syria..Without "him". And blind people like us never even know we are blind.
It really makes me angry when ordinary people here, who have rights "he" take away, defend "him" and talk of him, just as if he was, Syria. In this region rulers themselves think they really are the countries. Just them. Saddam for example literally said " I am Iraq", an Iraqi man told me once. Anyway, regardless if "they" are guilty of the Harriri murder or not, they have done more than enough to be charged for murder..How much Local blood has been lost in complete silence, no big headlines, no UN reports, no international media, no big wide demonstrations, opposition members, relatives, just poor people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time..Maybe this is the time they will finally get some justice. I was not surprised when I heard about the"suicide"of the witness Kan3an. It's a common thing here. And I am certainly not sad for a man like him. I was not surprised when the "killers" of the Kurd sheik died in "accidents" either. I really don't care about "them". I will just enjoy the little things that give pleasure in life. I will see "bubbles"with Dureid Laham& Nihad Qalai. O the good old times, I wish I was from another generation, to experience for example when Syria and Lebanon had the same currency, and only one, and common, bank. And no hatred.

I donno why I feel calm!!
I've got this strange feeling that what's done is already done, a deal is sealed and we're back to "business as usual"!! maybe not litterally changes are definitly due, but nothing serious... I don't think "Creative Chaos" is finding it's way to syria... and I still donno whether that's a good thing or bad thing!
I will stat off with say that I am an American man who is working in the Middle East for the last 2 years or so. I had many of the same sterio types about arabs as most Americans do, however since I have taken the time to sit down and talk and get to know my arab friends there is no foundation to cast a sterio type at all. In basic terms many of us all have the same goals in life god, family, sercurity (finance and physical) and a good home. Outside of that the ways that we approch these goals is fundamently different with religon and customs from which I respect so I will not go into.
I as an American do not hate you because you are Syrian. Please do not hate me because I am American.
We both have goverments that have done things that we are not proud of. Personally I am embarased at some the things that my government has done in past. I feel in some way maybe I need to appologize in some way to some one about these things.
I just wanted to let you know at least from my prospective that you are not hated even though govermental differences cast a bad relections on the Syrian people as well as mine cast a bad reflection on me.
You're American? I guess they don't teach you how to spell or structure your sentences properly in America.. eh?
I'm sorry.. but this is a pathetic attempt to fake this "mixture of civilization" you're trying to convey in your message.. if you're Syrian, I don't know what you're trying to accomplish by assuming an American man's identity, and if you're not, then I don't know what you want by posting this comment..
in either way, you mis-spelled Stereotype .... :-|
Cathrine..
I applaude you for the courage you have for writing this reply.. your posts were always interesting, but this post is the true voice of the Syrian youth that was brought up in these times of brainwash, thought control and tyrany...
if Syrian youth have 50 percent of the courage and foresight you have (which was demonstrated in this post and previous ones) then we are heading towards a better future.
Thank you.. you brought optimism back to me heart..

My grandmother is half Damascene half Lebanese, my Mother studied in Beirut in the 70's, and my aunt's husband is a lebanese palestinian.. talk about "Sawa rbeena"...!!!!
Hatered is already planted in the hearts of Syrians and Lebanese people. Deep inside they can distinguish between the people and the government, but the passionate reaction (which is mostly irrational) can't see the difference, and no one should be blamed for that..
however, I keep seeing Europ after before World war one, and after World war II.. Berline was brought to her knees, Saint Pertersbourgh in Russia was turned to ashes, France was shaken with bombs, and even beirut was turned into a cemetary in the 70's after the civil war....they all recovered and stood on their feet afterwards.. even the french and the brits are back to sitting on the same table, so there is no reason why Syrians and lebanese won't do after the reasons of hate are washed away..
We will take the fall because of this report (we will take it for someone else's doing, not for our own doing as Syrian people), we will have a few hard years, but with will power, and open minded people like you.. we will go back again.
I second Anonymous.. your Blog is a window of hope that Syrian youth is still alive and clever.. I hope you post more often .. I check your blog everyday wondering what the next post will be.. and I am never disappointed :)
That is the big scheme of things that our generation is facing. Power and money rule everything we are facing politically. So rich maniacs rule the world and the nations. Many must be sharing your thoughs in this entry (as long as thinking is harmless, LOL... kidding).
Anyway, regardless of whether the anonymous was an American or not, I agree with him/her that there is a seperation between the government and people. And in fact I had some Americans apologize to me (in USA) for their government invasion of Iraq (and I am Syrian).
The only thing I hope is that they leave the people alone because we have enough trouble of our own besides the Arabic Nationalism and Palestenian Case and so forth...
lol... even though the leaders of the world are less than 500 persons .. but still more than 180 billions of people are crushed under their feet :( ... so 18 millions of syrian perons is a small number and easily crushable for them ... but no and never... it's not about praising the leader.. it's about fear of the change for the worse .. besides... things are getting better in baby steps..
Cathrine,
you said what millions of people fear to say (or even to think about).
Governments lead their countries, but governments don't always do their people's will. Governments screw up, then their people have to pay the price.
round and round... I hope this won't happen with us :(

Omar, dazed & confused: Really? I am very happy that some one likes my blog. Thank you :-)
Omar you have a point. One should ofcouse stay hopefull..Without hope we are lost.
Indonesia is a good example to learn from in transitioning from dictatorship of the longest serving presidency in the world to full democracy.
Change does happens but it requires efforts from the grass root. The idea of democracy must not belong just to the elite and the well off.
