GREAT music!
Some time ago I read an article about an Iraqi musician, Naseer Shamma, who played a music piece dedicated to Iraqi children who had suffered incredibly after the first Iraq -Us (and allies) war, and all what followed. Apparently it was very moving, and some American official lady there approached afterwards to say how touched she was and sorry for what ever her government might have contributed to this. I noted his name thinking I should check this music out..See what is it all about.
And now by a chance I found his website. His music is very typical eastern Arab countries, very classical..But still very creative and new..And very very beautiful!!! I don't know about you, but I absolutely loved it. This will be one of my absolute favorites.
It made me think about Iraq and how truly sorry I am for what is happening with this beautiful country. The music about Baghdad made me love Baghdad and think about it's calm night, the green lights coming from mosques, mild evening wind, the light smell of jazzmen/other flowers- just as I love Damascus .
In the end..No matter how much blood will be lost, Iraq will survive..Lebanon will survive..And hopefully, Iraq's treasures, people like Naseer shamma and other intellectuals..Will finally..finaly..Go back to the country that needs them.
The best thing for last : some of his music here (pick قطع موسيقية)..And if you like it as well, do like me..Go buy some, now!!
Found also an interesting interview on that site ..It ends like this:
I just have to عشرين هsay : indeed! How come I only hear and see "musicians" like Haifa and Nancy everywhere( TV, magazines) , and not hear about guys like him..

Naseer Shamma is great Musician
he raised his 3oud as a weapon and a mean for solidarity against the American Monster..
but in fact I am so upset cause of him !
from about one mounth he had an interview in Al-Hurra Space channel.. and he didn't mention anything about he great work about Iraqi children..
it's very deppressing when you see such great man... ignoring his case in American channel!
So he did not mention anything about the present of this region? I mean so much of his music is just about that, even the names of the music pieces has to do with the current and past tragedies and hopes..Weired. But don't judge him that hard yet, maybe there were some good reasons/ explanations we don't know about or something?
I mean judging from all what he did and does, and the interviews and all..I think he is an honest man who cares a lot about humans.
Thx for the link, Catherine...
I loved the music.
u r welcome :)
i like his music but not him as a person he is arrogant! and he thinks that all the world evolver around him as if he's every thing i know many of his students also and they have got all his ways in every thing every single thing!! but his music is good but when you know him in person you wont be able to like his music! and i think the song you'e talking about is called il 3amalye its so touchy it made my tears come down from my eyes if you want to hear a good one i like its a bit funny its called qiset 7ob sharqyeh an estern love story :) check it out and tell me what do you think
Allready listened to it on the site..I really like it, as I like almost all the music he did.
you are totaly right Cath!
i listen to rock songs because i find the modern Arabic music so repeated and stupid! most of it..
but just a year ago i started to listen to many other musicians as:
-Sherbel Rouhana,
-Munir Bashir
-Anwar Ibrahima
-Rabi3 Abou Khalil
-Marsell Khalifeh
Yes, the "habibi" music can get way too repeated and stupid sometimes..
That's many more I have'nt heard about(except Marcel Khalifeh) so thanks for the tip, I'll check them out :)
Hi Catherine,
I am working on a newspaper report about Arab bloggers. I'd like to get in touch with you for the article. Can you please drop me an email at megcairo@hotmail.com?
Thanks a lot.
Let's hope it does work out for the best!
Catherine, regarding this guy requesting an interview, are u sure you want that kind of attention?
Just wondering!
Oh..You think???Now you scare me, sandmonkey!..
It's not like I am gonna give up my adress or something..But hmm..
Are 'nt things like that easier in Egypt? I am absolutly no threat to any one or even thing...What a silly world.
It is nice music. I liked Ishraq.
Thanks.
Tse.
Hi Catherine,
I thought you were an interesting online voice that would add another perspective to the article. As for things being easier in Egypt, the article is taking a pan-Arab view. If you're scared, that's fine, but if you don't mind me pointing out _ you do run a blog, so I don't see how you or sandmonkey can worry about attracting attention. If you don't want to give out your email you can always set up another address at yahoo or hotmail. Or disregard the whole thing. It's entirely up to you.
Being half Iraqi:) I love his music and enjoy it very much:D, but it sometimes it made me feel depressed.
