Forum and silence.

You probably already heard that if you keep silence when you see injustice than you are an accomplice. Perhaps teachers said that, quoting some great Arab philosopher, or your parents might have said it teaching you moral or you may have heard it on TV..
But you don't really hear people using that often in real problems or injustice in life. .It's just a nice thing to say in general, it's not used or said about any specific problem.
However, somehow a couple of people did this time and inspired to me to write here. ( I swallow a lump in my throat and go on..May god forgive me) In one of my favorite blogs Abu Rumaneh asked an interesting question : For how long will we stay just eye witnesses? And in safahat there was an article by a human rights activist with the head line :

الساكت عن الظلم متواطئ أخرس

and of course, since we are talking about Syria here, you will always find a poem about that somewhere, in the current inflation of poetry (although I don't mean to attack the level of any poem here)

أيها الشعب لا تنم إن في النوم مقتلك

Well the background of this is that 8 members of a political discussion forum, muntada al atassi, were arrested recently. The relatives of those eight members held a vigil in Damascus demanding their release, and decided they would hold a vigil everyday until they get released. The first day it went fine, but the following day they where attacked by a group of "supporters" and beaten. And they decided to stop hold vigils. (source:safahat)Perhaps this might have come as a chock to many people here, since many are expecting big reforms and changes, specially in the upcoming Baath conference.However many are not,and saying the pressure on Syria by USA seem to make the government more touchy and crack down on opponents and daring voices.Recently also the president for Arab committee for rights joined those. And there was a demonstration. Oppositions members abroad in exile were offered to come back and get passports, but in the end some gave them advises to stay outside.The majority seem not so hopeful :In an opinion poll in Aljazeera about 70 % thought Syria is not heading towards reforms (هل تتجه سوريا نحو الإصلاح فع).However there might be some good news for journalists with a new committee to protect them.Very recently also there was a program on Aljazeera about reforms in Syria...There were times where I couldn't help laughing, funny how entertaining politics can be! It's either cause someone said something that just made me crack in laughter, or it' cause they are shouting and look so furious at each other...In some of those shows I watch hoping they won't jump and hit each other a "tayara" for example and embarrass the TV, the viewers and themselves..Cause if that would start I don't know if it would be easy to stop them! And we will just say How embarrassing! What a shame! Typical..Arabs still fighting like tribes, just what we need!That did actually happen once..On an episode of "Maraya", my favorite Syrian satirical program..But somehow I might understand them a little bit, specially Ghanam, it is, after all, very "infected" issues they discussed..And he probably had been much more exposed cause of his ideas and position so he might get more easily angry..Maybe it's better to bring someone who is either in the opposition too but has an extraordinary ability of staying calm, or bring a person,(at least next to the opposition so he can take over sometimes) not so active in opposition but who knows a lot about it and human rights and corruption and failures etc...Than the dialog might get more effective. The way I see it anyway..Cause most of the time they were saying more or less "You are so bad..We don't want you..You have failed"I would have preferred them arguing more about specific things..Talk more about specific examples of corruption, name a certain deal, the amounts and persons involved, etc..I must say though the outspoken journalist Hakam Al baba spoke well.And here Lebanese still, after all, keep close ties with, and care about Syrians...Lebanon always felt like a close relative. ( I swallow another lump in my throat..Why do I do this..For some reason I hear the famous saying : If talk is silver, silence is gold)
جمعيات حقوقية ومثقفون في لبنان ينددون بالاعتقالات في سورية
2005/05/27 بيروت ـ ا ف ب: نددت جمعيات وهيئات حقوق الانسان في لبنان بـ التصرف الاستبدادي للنظام السوري، وحضت في بيان الجمعة المنظمات الدولية علي التحرك العاجل للافراج الفوري عن المعتقلين والكف عن ملاحقة العاملين في مجال حقوق الانسان والمجتمع المدني . واضاف بيان هذه الجمعيات الذي نشرته الصحف اللبنانية ان اصرار السلطات السورية علي متابعة نهج انتهاكات حقوق الانسان وتكريسه، وابتلاء هذا القطر الشقيق بنظام استبدادي، ترك اثره البليغ في الواقع اللبناني، وهو يدل علي ان همه الوحيد البقاء علي حساب تدمير ونهب كل البني الحية والفاعلة في المجتمع . وطالبت هذه الجمعيات من جهة ثانية في بيانها بـ فتح ملف المعتقلين اللبنانيين في السجون السورية، والكشف عن مصير المخطوفين والمفقودين علي ايدي السلطات السورية واجهزة مخابراتها، اعلنت انها لم تفاجأ باعتقال جميع اعضاء مجلس منتدي جمال الاتاسي للحوار الوطني . وتطالب العديد من الجمعيات اللبنانية السلطات السورية بالكشف عن مصير لبنانيين يقول ذووهم انهم معتقلون في السجون السورية، الامر الذي تنفيه سورية. وتقدر المنظمات غير الحكومية بـ 271 عدد اللبنانيين المعتقلين في سورية. ووقع البيان الجمعية اللبنانية لحقوق الانسان، ومؤسسة مرصاد ، ولجنة المتابعة لدعم المعتقلين في السجون الاسرائيلية، والمنظمة الفلسطينية لحقوق الانسان، ومركزالخيام لتأهيل ضحايا التعذيب، ولجنة اهالي المخطوفين والمفقودين في الحرب اللبنانية، والحملة الوطنية لنزاهة القضاء، ولجنة اهالي المعتقلين في السجون السورية (كما نشرت الصحف عريضة موقعة من مثقفين لبنانيين بعنوان الحرية لدعاة الحرية في سورية نددوا فيها بـ تصاعد ظاهرة الاعتقال السياسي في سورية والتمادي في انتهاك حرية الرأي والتعبير داعين الي اغلاق ملف الاعتقال السياسي نهائيا . واضاف البيان ما يدعونا الي القلق الشديد علي حرية الرأي والتعبير في سورية، ان هذا الاجراء القمعي جاء في سياق اجراءات مماثلة سبقته ادت الي توقيف محمد رعدون، رئيس المنظمة العربية لحقوق الانسان في سورية والكاتب علي العبدالله العضو في ادارة منتدي الاتاسي . وطالب البيان بـ الافراج الفوري عن هؤلاء المعتقلين جميعا وعن بقية معتقلي الرأي والموقف السياسي والعمل السريع علي اغلاق ملف الاعتقال السياسي نهائيا في سورية . ووقع البيان نحو ستين مثقفا في طليعتهم رئيس تحرير صحيفة النهار غسان تويني وصاحب جريدة السفير طلال سلمان. وكانت اجهزة الامن السورية اعتقلت فجر الثلاثاء اعضاء مجلس ادارة منتدي الاتاسي للحوار الوطني في دمشق في منازلهم في العاصمة السورية. وبين الموقوفين الثمانية، رئيسة المنتدي سهير الاتاسي والكاتب الصحافي حسين العودات الذي كان يدير الندوات. ومنتدي الاتاسي كان الوحيد بين المنتديات التي ظهرت خلال ربيع دمشق الذي اعقب تسلم الرئيس السوري بشار الاسد السلطة في العام 2000، الذي استمر في نشاطه بعد اغلاق السلطات المنتديات الاخري
