Bigger change in Egypt
Still there is a lot of talking about reforms and changes and some expect huge changes after the Baath Party Conference, scheduled for June.
No doubt that the situation today in Syria is much better than earlier because people are less afraid. And no doubt one should always hope for the better, otherwise nothing will ever change.
But just hoping and waiting are not enough for real change. We should DO something too, and right now we are still...Just waiting and don't dare to do any thing more.
Also one should not confuse things..Yes it's great that we finally in Syria have cell phones and internet( about time!!)..But a lot of powerful people gained huge dirty money on some deals, and the least to say is that it was a great loss for the economy of Syria. That shouldn't be forgotten..And not confused with political reforms!
Extreme powerful and corrupt people, no matter where in the world, will not just give everything away to the people over a night. It's not just about them, and it's not just their responsibility.
One thing we need to realize is that we should stop act like if we were small children, asking for some money from our (powerful) parents to get some toys (hospitals ,schools, and companies that offer internet and cell phones) and thank them so much for it! You see..What we (the kids) don't know is that it's our money to begin with, and we shouldn't exaggerate thanking anyone for building hospitals or whatever with some of it. While there is a huge other part we never see.
Besides, I think it's just unfair, to leave all the responsibility on the few powerful. It's unfair to them..
And true change, happens when more people are prepared to take responsibility and be more active. And lately, thank god, I find there is a lot of reasons to smile when I hear news from Egypt. So many times there have been demonstrations and vigils by kefaya..They are not just demanding lifting of laws of emergency state, they are demanding things no one in many other arab countries -but yes, they have other minorities too..just to be fair!-would even dare to demand or talk about in dreams ! Wow! These are brave strong demands!! That..I NEVER thought would happen in an Arab country during my lifetime! I can't explain how proud of being an Arab that made me feel..Finally it happened! The civil society joined too..First the judges, and they are very important when it comes to this, and now also professors in universites..
No surprise, as in any Arab country, the regime called kefaya a traitor , (3ameel), working for foreign interests etc. etc.....But still they are there. The atmosphere in Egypt feels far away from the one here. People talk about politics without fear, they talk and compare regime and opposition openly.
Even in the blogsphere you can see that..People are not afraid to make fun of ANYONE, and they discuss everything, they are not afraid of quoting and commenting on what opposition leaders do and say.
And that does not stop them from meeting, because they are not afraid.
I am sure the road for Egypt is long. It's always , and everywhere in the world, long. And the change and hope come from the people there. Not the regime itself who only can loose power and money with real change.
Of course we always need hope, but we also need to have our eyes open.
About things like this for example.
And I hope ..These changes..Will lead to more people breaking the wall of fear. .And let's not forget there have been vigils here recently, that is a big change from the past.. Inspite the beating and arrests. And I hope there will come a time where you can do like Egyptians, write things like this and still not fear meeting people. I hope the wall of fear will be broken. And I hope Al doumari will come back, for good! I remember long time ago..My father and his friends from work predicted, in a way, what's going on in Egypt. They said it was a place of fear too ..But than somehow the number of people increased everywhere..And many voices making fun of the regime and complaining become very usual, there were not enough secret police to track down every one who joked or spoke any more.
And here is another hopeful person from a neighboring country saying:

Catherine, did you read what Joshua Landis wrote in his syriacomment.com? He also compared between Syria and Egypt. He argued that Egypt is more ready for reforms because it has better-established and more independent state institutions. I think this is very true. We need to reform institutions before they can lead reform!
Yes true. But I think that Egypt's insitutions and civil society in general, have not been so tightly controlled, scared and even ruled, for quite some time..
But changes and unpredicted events can happen (and did) in different places and different ways. You never know what can happen..
