A girl's fight to walk in her city.
It's not easy to try to be an independent girl here.
Even if my family is quite liberal, the problem does'nt end there. A while ago it was nice weather, and I have been spendig a lot of time inside, reading, and doing other things I had to do. When then finally I had some freetime I wanted desperatly to enjoy it. I wanted to get out of the appartements's walls. I wanted to enjoy my city and go on a long walk. Enjoy this little temporary freedom. My father agreed on letting me go , alone, seeing I allready made my desicion, and no one wanted or could accompagny me. But he did'nt like it: Me walking alone.
But that is what I wanted. I was tired of the family's shouting and wanted to find some peace, alone.
So I walked. Alone. Feeling very free and happy. But in some crowded areas, I was bothered.
In Salheie for example a couple of young men fowllowed me for a while, practising (a bit agressive) "taltish"(=hitting )on girls.
That sort of thing happens all over the world, young men attracted to women and trying to get in contact with them. So...I should'nt get too upset..
But no, there is some thing else. They where very (too) persistent, allthough it was clear I was angry at that. They followed me for a long time before I could loose them. These young men, their looks..They where poor, very poor, no doubt, dark skinned, have been outside often, alot, I am guessing they have spent a big part of their time outside, on the streets. Wearing very old sweaty thin funny coulorfull shirts. They did'nt really have a plan walking in the city..They had nothing to do... A big possibility they where poor unemployees. After beeing very angry at them, I felt sorry for them. When something bother's you it's very important to see it from the other side too. These poor, men who looked almost like beggars..
They are ...Young men..Yes...No matter what, they,
in this spring time of their lifes, need girls' company desperatly. It is nature, as strong as a hurricane, no religion nor poverty or conservative society can ever ever brake it..And what are their chances of getting that ?!...So poor, simple, no job, probably no education..How easy will it be to find a bride here?..Since relations are banned in this conservative society..Mostly, to get approved a coulpe need to be engaged or married. Impossible for so many young Syrians with the horrible unemployment and economy. So living without any contact with the other sex..against nature..leads to a psycological sexual crisis, and they get mad like if they never seen a girl before..Which is a little true in conservative socities, and there are too many...
And as they act like crazy sexually starved men, even liberal families get scared and hide their dotters at home. And with even less girls that men at least can look at and dream, the problem get worse and the men get even more obsesst. And on it goes...
This conservative stupid way of thinking is the reason for all troubles here, instead of accepting nature and letting women go out with men and search for love and grow up emotionally ,(and just ask dotters about boys they like and when they have a relationship the family can invite the man to meet him..and even meet his family, so they feel safe!), instead of that pepole insist on living in dark ages, making things go from bad to worse..
Pepole fight over the length of women's skirts or other clothes, while nobody is fighting for a dying lifeless Syria, and over 250 million arabs insisting on living in the dark ages,in the name of religion and traditions!, and still wondering(!!) why they are defeated by so few -free- pepole , and occupied, erased, killed, and hungry, poor, weak..
I wish I wrote thist in arabic!
And as for me....I am too a citizen of this city, and I have as much right to walk on it's streets, alone, just like all the men walking in it. And I am not going to give up that right!

Hey, Catherine,
Great entry! There is so much I have to learn about the realities of Damascus, things I cannot learn easily being an outsider. Your perspective is really interesting. I will continue to read what you have to say.
Salut Cath, welcome to bloggers world!
yeah i really don't understantd why when you have to start any discussion with anyone; he begin it with attacking women!
so alll our plotical problems, social problems... are thrown on women!
many people think seriously that we lost the war of 67 because of Um Kalthum!!
and now Israel is commiting massacres and building settelments because of girls that wearing short skirts..
and if a girl wearing fasion passed by you hear many comments such as: if women are wearing like that, so how can we be a great nation and defete our invadors?
ahhhh... silly..
now here is a problem i suffer from girls here; when i look at a girl in my college and ask her what time is it ? i recieve two diffrent answers:
1- don't you have a watch? and why don't you go and ask a man? why did you left the whole calss room and asked me? ha??
2- ohh, umm... time?? eee (a shy smile like i'm asking her to go out)..
girls aren't allowed to hang out, to manage their life, to work in many cases. and the result is girls brain begin to shrink, and she loses her comunity's respect.
Yeah I know exactly what you mean...Pepole in general in Syria are not allowed to think independently (specially young!) at all, but women...are treated like they are things, belongings, to their families, them their husbands...Eventually they do become..just things...no brains...no strenght..no will...
Well not always mabe thank god...But way too often.
hey...
i'm really impressed by you...i read some of your comments on karfan's website and joshua landis' website...and u seem to be pretty independent, a rarity for syrian women...any time i try to open a topic that is remotely political, all syrian girls get bored immediately...
what is kinda weird for me is that on joshua landis' site (syriacomment.com), in one of your comments on his last post u put a link to some article on www.thisissyria.net, which as far as i'm aware is banned in syria (the last time i was there that was the case), so how r u aware of this site?
Yes It is banned, and yes it belongs to some muslim opposition party/branch I think, I don't agree with that paty's ideas on everything,I am afraid they might, or some of them, not be democratic if they ever got the power, however now, they claim to support the idea of democracy. But anyway they do offer interestinge independent articles by goog Syrian journalists (often published in Lebanese/ other press). It is banned in Syria along with many other sites..And it is in Syria VERY hard, if not almost impossible..to even know about them. And very dangerous.
I had the great chance of having relatives abroad, I visit sometimes. My interest in politics began when a good history teacher told me I should always demand why, and be critical of the sources you hear things from...So when I was abroad I went to a library and borrowed a book about democracy and human rights in Syria, by an international human rights organisation.I wanted to try to know why is there no democracy here. Then I looked for further information on the net..The free world of information :)
Since then I try to follow politics, suddenly it became much more alive, human and important.
Catherine,
I agree completely with your post. It baffles me why people are so repressive...
In any case, I could not find another way to contact you in response to the comment you made on my blog about Dmashq Al Arabiyya... did you really go there?
If so, that's a rare coincidence to have found somebody! The school belongs to my grandfather on my mother's side; if you went there you probably know who that is.
To say the least education needs improvement in Syria.
Anyway, please respond in an email if you can: ysalahi@gmail.com or ysalahi@berkeley.edu
Should we or Shouldnt ,how an when.
Citizenship and Coexistence are two different things ,the citizenship is an inherited duty by all affiliates referred to as citizens , inforced and governed by lows .As for coexistence it is a cohabitation among a pack a group of numerous types of peoples we cant brand as humans ,because we all are humans ,but we are of different nature and on various levels of education and sensibility as earned and worked for to better our selves by the low of nature..
Unfortunately the miss behaviouer of a pack of young citizens on the street ,is by no means acceptable or even justifiable due to them being starved or unemployed ,by far such is not acceptable ,not because it is a simple TALTEESH ,it is not acceptable from them as citizens same is not acceoted by those who breack the low daily on all levels by not complying to the low governing us all citizens .
The fact such happened to you while you are on a walk regardless the reasons .Such a behaviouer is as condemned as “Rashwa” bribery ,and more so as being dirty by miss handling control of garbage , by not performing as a sevel servent ,by useing your official post to personal gain .and all other vises that our national integrity and rights are being violated .
Should we tolerate and and keep quite and make excuses ? or should we fight back ?
The choice is yours and mine ,and for all other citizens ,to put the low and order back simply by refuseing to accept sub standerds ,we have to make such vises stop, only then we can coexist .if not at presnt ? when are we going to start to progress as the rest of the good world standreds.
Do you want to debate?leave me note on your next post.
After reading your post re rights of girl to walk freely, I am for one do suffer the same on daily bases as I have to walk and use public transport to work ,and you and I can imagine the degradation.
I could not help reading the comment (“Should we or shouldn’t we, and when”) .It is true that this thing is no more a girly thing to walk safely, it is about our existence in a polluted society full of pests that ,block the roads to our homes ,they drive latest model cars ,thy come first and take every thing that is my right ,simply because of WASTAAA.or they are related to a higher echelon.
I am a teacher for the past 12 yrs, some of my student’s pocket money is more than my salary,
I know teachers who don’t come to work and they are paid!!!I know some who went abroad on a teacher’s scholarship, and they have no clue about teaching, funny enough they don’t even work in the field.
We live in fear and hope we are not confronted, but next time I am challenged I will say no ,and pray that I will have the courage to keep saying it ,me and others whom I wish and pray will take the same attitude ,yes there are lows and those lows are made to protect us ,we have to stand up and say I cant take it no more .
Me to I dont think it is a woman issue ,if women become as an object !!!hmm it is there fault in the wrong behaiviouer ,because you can be whom you want ,a slave or a master .it takes no only no as they said before me .
To my so called "Syrian Catherine"
I am a syrian citizen and had grown up between London and Damascus, however it is funny how you can see the only way forward is to adopt the westernised life style.
I really feel sorry for your incapability to understand the meanings behind those culture bariers, and to be honest I do agree that we have lots of problems, but you are completely wrong .
I am at uni at the moment and so many girls are here going out with their so called love (shagger).
I swear by god If you come and live here and see those people without a brain on saturday night then you will understand better what I meant!!!!!!
You need to learn more in your life before giving an advice how to live our life .
Take care Catherin
catherin,ur right 100% ,but don't forget that almost all the Syrian people need social psychiatry!we should thank our God cause ,before we couldn't talk about men and women..but now at least you can say what do you feel..ba3den I was all my life in unisex school, but I didn't find any girl that she can talk about these conversations..!take care and thanks for this post :)
and Iwant to say that I trveled to many countries..but like syrians girls and boys I didn't find.. men don't think about the girls as human but all what they think that she should be his girlfriend not his friend!
Zaid
I really feel sorry for you, not just idiot, also talking about every Syrian as you are the most experienced person.
It is only in your mind that men can not make a friendship with women , but i can sence what rubbish is coming out.
Bro you need to seek help?
